Screech Owls Vase
Inspired first by a screech owl I could hear near my home. It's sweet whinnying sound carried through the air and when I learned what creature made the call I I could not get the out of my mind! Second, I had been asked to teach a class at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary where I got to see two screech owls up close. One was a red phase and the other a gray.
This gourd featured 3 screech owls, each with a starry sky behind with a thin silver leaf border. The bottom part of the gourd has a border of painted carving. The interior of the gourd is weighted on the bottom to give a heavy feel to the piece.
11" tall and about 6 1/2" wide
This art is made from a real, natural gourd. Be sure to see the photo of a gourd growing in the garden before it is dried for artistic use. Once dried it will last as long as a piece of wood.
Care: Please display away from direct sunlight. UV protectant sealer is applied to help prevent this, but it should be treated like any piece of valuable art. Not designed to hold water or food.
Each gourd is planned, researched, sketched, designed extensively before even beginning the piece.
To prepare, I clean and sand the gourd; the insides are coated with a protective layer of paint.
Then I freehand draw my original designs directly onto the gourd; then I use a woodburning pen to illustrate (pyrography) the image on the gourd.
I use mixed media to color the gourds.
