Selkies are mythical shapeshifting creatures that shed their seal skin and come ashore in human form. The myth comes from Scotland, Ireland, Orkney and Shetland areas but I have found thatthere are actually quite many places of folklore that similar stories as this come from. I have done this theme a few times and continue to be fascinated with the story and idea.
The artwork has been done with pyrography, or a hot pen. There are carving and metallic ink accents.
